Spring is here (almost)
We've not had any snow yet, but
spring is just round the corner, and here at My Big Sister we can’t wait. With
the warmer weather come some unique ideas to personalise your wedding look.
And what better way to celebrate
this season of love, and be bang on trend, than with a floral crown! We
absolutely adore this celebration of blossoms and beauty, and we think you will
too.
The ideal blend of whimsical and
boho-chic; nature supplies the perfect selection of accessories to complete
your look. Use as an eye catching pin on your sophisticated up-do, or go for a
more summer-of-love feel with a tiara on long flowing locks, this look is
suitable for everyone.
The only problem is choosing what
flowers and design to go for! So we've made a handy little guide of what’s in
season this spring to suit every girl.
Baby's Breath
Sometime’s less is more. Baby’s
breath is simple, but beautiful and would compliment both a sophisticated do,
and accentuate a more natural look.
Daisies
Nothing say’s spring is here more than daisies! They’re
fresh, classic and not very costly. If you’re feeling particularly frugal, you
can pick your own and adorn them with a couple of well placed bobby pins.
Hyacinth
Hyacinths have a distinct shape and would look amazing with
a sleek gown. Their star-like appearance is reminiscent of the headpieces worn
in the 20’s, so you can combine two trends in one!
Lilac
Lilacs
provide a delicate option, which would look great as a cluster or dotted
throughout a hairstyle.
Ranunculus
If you’re looking to make a bit more a statement then
Ranunculus is the way to go. These grow in a variety of colours, so can be
co-ordinated with the rest of your colour scheme. They’re sleek flower also
compliments a more modern look.
You can see of our favourite floral crowns on our Pinterest board here.
Whatever you choose, we know you’ll be a natural beauty on
your big day.

The Modern Gift List
Way back when, the traditional wedding list could be guessed in its entirety by friends and family before even seeing the list. From kettles to pans to iron’s ‘The List’ comprised of everything the happy couple needed to set up home.
Nowadays the ‘traditional’ list is a thing of the past. The vast majority of couples live together before even getting engaged so though the odd Le Creuset casserole dish might appear on the list, couples by and large are already kitted out for married life.
A new age of list is upon us with even the Nintendo Wii creeping into the top 10 of ‘must have’ wedding gifts. Silver photo frames have been replaced by digital frames and kettles have been replaced by Nespresso Coffee Makers.
Selfless couples are jumping on the celeb bandwagon and opting out of lists completely by requesting charitable donations for needy causes! Others are being more practical and asking for contributions to honeymoons and houses and even new baby funds.
At the end of the day the list is only a guide! No member of the congregation is contractually obliged to buy a gift and at MBS we are sure that no matter how big or small your gift will be very much appreciated by the blushing bride and groom!

What's your favour?
Wedding favours have become the ‘thing to do’ in recent years. But do we really have to give all our guests a little gift or has this become an over Americanised phenomenon which is just another extra to add to our ever increasing wedding budget?
Whether you think they are necessary or not as a guest we love the favours - from sugared almonds to fridge magnets, getting a little gift puts a smile on everyones face!
There are a wealth of favours to choose from and wedding magazines and websites are brimming with ideas suitable for all budgets. So instead of words of wisdom we thought we would give you an insight into wedding favours from ludicrously expensive to the sublime and ridiculous!
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban went for an engraved Tiffany & Co desk clock for each of their guests. At £481 each they must have seriously liked the clock!
Eva Longoria and Tony Parker gave each female guest a Van Cleef and Arpels Sweet Alhambra bracelet. We wish we had been invited I just feel sorry for the men!
Liza Minelli and David Gest chose satin sweetie boxes with Liza and David 4ever embroidered on them! Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be and they got divorced a year later!
Lottery Tickets – a novel idea but what would you do if a guest won the jackpot? We wouldn't be very happy brides!
Whether you choose to favour or not – have a fab day!

To be seen and not heard
Whether a wedding is child free or child friendly it is totally up to you. It is a very personal decision and a bride and groom should never feel they ‘have’ to invite children just because there are children in the bridal party. Just because you dote on a niece or nephew does not mean you have to put up with your beloveds work colleagues screaming monsters.
That said if you do decide to request the pleasure of everyone’s company no matter how little, MBS have put together some suggestions on keeping the youngsters entertained so you can enjoy your day safe in the knowledge the congregations little darlings are being looked after!
Hire Help – Not all wedding budgets stretch to Norland Nannies but there is help out there to fit every budget. Ask friends with Kids about there babysitters or au pairs or ask your vicar if any youngsters in the congregation could help – for some extra pocket money of course! Have a child friendly zone dedicated in the reception and let them play under a couple of watchful eyes.
Table Art – Paper table cloths and crayons! Simple, cheap and very fun! Pop in some glitter pens and the kids will be good to go!
Bubble Machines – What is it with children and bubbles? No matter how old, kids love bubbles, set up a bubble machine in the grounds of your venue and watch the kids go wild (chasing them will tire them out for later too!)
Entertainment Experts – Bring in the experts by hiring clowns or children’s magicians. Get them to sit down with the kids and teach them tricks and jokes but make sure you have an area set aside for this, you don’t want speeches interrupted by the sounds of squeaking balloon animals!
Outside Activities – If you are lucky enough to be holding your reception at a country house or by the beach utilise your outside space. Get staff to make up assault courses or ask your babysitters to take the kids to the beach to fly kits and build sandcastles.
Whatever you decide on your big day it will be fabulous with or without the little ones!

A Touch of Tartan
It seems Autumn/ Winter 2011 is welcoming the return of Tartan from the catwalk to the high street tartan is everywhere this coming season. Everyone from Burberry to Tory Burch and everywhere from New York to Milan have adorned their models in tartan and Scotland couldn’t be happier.
This gives our Scottish brides the excuse to not only don their family fabric but also to be uber en vogue whist walking down the aisle. Sometimes there is nothing better than a splash of colour on a wedding dress and you cannot often beat something as sentimental as tartan.
Anta hand sew some of the most fantastic bespoke wedding dresses on offer in Scotland , with a touch of tartan of course! Truly beautiful tops with boned corsets and skirts made to your exact specifications make Anta brides the Quintessentially Scottish Belle. Traditional white wedding dresses can be transformed into tartan masterpieces during the reception by simply turning a corset inside out or changing a skirt.
If you fancy adding a bit of Tartan to your big day but you want a bit more subtlety why not look at the M&S Autumn/Winter 2011 lingerie collection. With some absolutely fab tartan Bras and matching knickers – your man will be impressed whether he is Scottish or not!

Bridezilla and the Brideslaves
Bridezilla’s are a well-known phenomena - seemingly lovely individuals who come over all nutty the second the ring is on their finger. We all know a few girls who have done it; even the most chilled out of ladies can become an absolute she-devil before the big day! That said MBS believe every lucky lady has the right to be a wee bit demanding, weddings are stressful and when we are in search of perfection tempers can get frayed!
That said there are a new breed of demanding little madams in town; the Bridesmaid Diva! These are the bridesmaids who do not see their role as playing the proud and helpful BFF but see the whole thing as a chore! The Bridesmaid Diva moans about her dress, does what she wants for the hen do (even if it is highly inappropriate and out of the brides budget) and prefers to flirt her way through the reception as opposed to help play host.
Unfortunately for your lucky ladies they should be more Brideslave and less Bridesmaid Diva. It is the one day when your chosen few just have to grin and bare it and do it for the greater good! If they hate their dress or have a pounding hangover unfortunately the brideslaves have to keep effortlessly cool and tiresomely helpful – it comes with the territory!
Pre-wedding preparations can take their strain on the strongest and longest of relationships. Tempers are shortened and budgets can take their toll; forget arguing with your betrothed about the buttonholes it is sometimes the least likely member of the bridal party who can scupper your plans for the big day.
MBS wants your day to be perfect and our top tip to all involved whether they be Best Man/Bridesmaid/Groom/Bride or Mother of the Bride – just KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON!
